Sins That Ticked Off God

Estimated Reading Time: 11 minutes

Lewdness and Whoredoms:

Lewdness is being sexual in an offensive or rude way. The article, Secret Sodomites, contains several New Testament scriptures that include words related to lewdness. Definitions are included in all the examples of unclean lusts that God hates.

[1] Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. [2] Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. [3] Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man. ~Isaiah 47:1-3 KJV

Idols in the Temple:

Israel put idols in their temple and on their walls. God hated this. However, the body is a temple for the Holy Spirit to dwell. Here are a few examples:

Read about how the Israelites worshipped a gold calf while dancing naked in Exodus 32 KJV.

[24] And I [Aaron] said unto them, “Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.” [25] And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:) -Exodus 32:24-25 KJV

Right after Joshua died the Israelites turned away again.

[13] And they forsook the Lord , and served Baal and Ashtaroth. [14] And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and He delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and He sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies. – Judges 2:13-14 KJV

Here’s a New Testament list of idolatry in one scripture:

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: ~Colossians 3:5 KJV

Check out this post about idolatry.

Pride and Coveting:

[7] Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots: [8] Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: [9] And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. [10] Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the Lord , and for the glory of His majesty. [11] The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. ~Isaiah 2:7-11 KJV

Sacrificing Children:

And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord. ~Leviticus 18:21 KJV

Human child sacrifice is the act of giving a child over to death. Profane means to not defile, pollute, wound, or dishonor the holy things of God. The children of Israel were warned not to sacrifice their children to Molech, an Ammonite false god because it profaned God’s name.

Many child-sacrifice examples exist beyond the act of abortion or the act of passing your seed through fire to a false god. Any sin teaching a child to turn from the living God causes death and destruction.

Examples include:

  • pedophelia;
  • incest;
  • allowing access to nudity or unclean lusts; 1
  • allowing filthy speech;
  • teaching how to kill or retaliate;
  • allowing drug use;
  • fearing restrictions, punishment, and boundaries for your child, which causes rebellion and a lack of sobriety for God
  • allowing a heart that seeks exaltation, beauty, and fame, which is vanity and pride.
  • witchcraft and wizardry 2

All of these also represent giving a child over to an idol, which turns them away from God’s truth.

And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. ~ 2 Chronicles 33:6 KJV

Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the well-favored harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts. Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of hosts; and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame. ~ Nahum 3:4-5 KJV

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkennes, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in times past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. ~ Galatians 5:19-21 KJV

Moses taught:

And he said unto them, “Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.” -Deuteronomy 32:46 KJV

Joshua repeated it:

But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all His ways, and to keep His commandments, and to cleave unto Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul. -Joshua 22:5 KJV

Jesus repeated and confirmed this in the New Testament. These same things apply except under grace because we have the Holy Spirit to help us to “walk in the Spirit” and not in the flesh.

Drug Idolatry

Moses warned the Israelites what God said about the people who did not serve God.

[4] For they will turn away thy son from following Me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly. [5] But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire. ~Deuteronomy 7:4-5 KJV

[3] And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place. -Deuteronomy 12:3 KJV

The Israelites angered God when they served Baal (Baalim) and Ashteroth. Ashteroth was a Phoenician goddess of trees known as groves. Ashteroth means happy in Hebrew. So these groves were probably drugs as we know of the highly-coveted marijuana, cocaine, and opiate groves that exist today. Some say people served Ashteroth in the groves, but if you read these scriptures carefully, you can see that God wanted the groves destroyed because the people served the groves.

[12] And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger. [13] And they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and Ashtaroth. ~Judges 2:12-13 KJV

[5] And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites: [6] And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods. [7] And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord , and forgat the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves. [8] Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years. ~Judges 3:5-8 KJV

And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, “Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:” ~Judges 6:25 KJV

Robbing the Poor and the Stranger

[29] The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully. [30] And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before Me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. [31] Therefore have I poured out Mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord God. ~ Ezekiel 22:29-31 KJV

Many scriptures exist about charity for the poor, the stranger, the widows, the orphans, and especially caring for those in your own home and congregation.

Hypocrite Leaders

Thus saith the Lord God ; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing! ~Ezekiel 13:3 KJV

Read about the prophets in Ezekiel 13 KJV. The male prophets regarded in this chapter spoke vanity, lies, and peace when there was no peace. Likewise, the female prophets prophesied out of their own hearts and made the righteous sad (because they didn’t believe the righteous), but strengthened the wicked. They earned food from their false interpretations with trinkets.

Church leaders are especially accountable to care for their flock.

Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the Lord. ~Jeremiah 23:2 KJV

Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, “Thus saith the Lord God unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?” ~Ezekiel 34:2 KJV

Likewise, Jesus scolded hypocrites who taught the laws of God, but did not do it.

[52] Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: [53] Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. ~Acts 7:52-53 KJV

And Of Course, the Seven Abominations

[16] These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto Him: [17] A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, [18] An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, [19] A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. ~Proverbs 6:16-19 KJV

Warnings of Wrath

Read more in the book of Ezekiel showing how God used the prophet to deliver His message to Israel because of their profusely wicked acts and refusing to be holy.

[9] And they that escape of you shall remember Me among the nations whither they shall be carried captives, because I am broken with their whorish heart, which hath departed from Me, and with their eyes, which go a whoring after their idols: and they shall lothe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations. [10] And they shall know that I am the Lord , and that I have not said in vain that I would do this evil unto them. ~Ezekiel 6:9-10 KJV

Regarding abominations:

Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. – Leviticus 18:25 KJV

After their great captivity and punishment, God re-establishes the temple duties to get them back on track.
