So You Think You’re Not Turning Tricks?

Christian women ought to guard themselves greatly. With all of our femininity, curves, beauty, or attractive parts, we have the potential to have power. And that is the problem. You see, from the beginning, the devil wanted to be worshipped. He desires power, attention, and control.

[12] How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! [13] For thou hast said in thine heart, “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: [14] I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.” [15] Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. [16] They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, “Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;” ~Isaiah 14:12-16 KJV

Have you noticed that many Christian women have different levels of modesty?  This is because certain false teachings have convinced many of us that “God only looks at the heart,” certain scriptures “no longer matter,” or those clothing standards “were customs” that we no longer follow—even though they are blatantly written in the New Testament for a reason.  That reason is to do the opposite of what Lucifer did and it is also so that people will take God’s Word seriously.  If we, as women, do not follow the word of the Lord, which tells us to be submissive, modest, sober, even plain, God knows that we will easily fall into deceiving traps that make us think we aren’t begging for worship too.

The Old Peer Pressure Trap

Many women think that they aren’t susceptable to peer pressure anymore because that was during their school days. However, the devil has been using it for years because it often works. Through the world, he has convinced many women that they need to prove that they are “just as capable as a man.”  In the example below, we see how the devil tries to get Jesus to prove himself.

[3] And when the tempter came to him, he said, “If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.”

[6] And saith unto him, “If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, ‘He shall give His angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.’” ~Matthew 4:3,6 KJV

If we know our Bible, we see that we are often just as capable.

But if we look to the world, we end up trying to prove ourselves. Women will work hard trying to prove themselves with careers, with fashion, and now even more with their own bodies through extreme physical restrictions or cosmetic and even surgical alterations. How the devil probably laughs at the covetous desire to alter the temple of the Holy Spirit for sexual attention.

[16] Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? [17] If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. [18] Let no man deceive himself.  If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he many be wise. [19] For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.  For it is written, “He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.” ~1 Corinthians 3:16-19 KJV

Women are always trying to prove that they are good enough. If we think about this through God’s eyes, we will see the lies for what they truly are. They are tricks to make us turn tricks. They are the deceptions that turn truths into lies so that we can have more attention, more money, more power, more control…

…more worship.

Strive to Do the Opposite of the Devil’s Desires

We are able to clearly see that the devil uses peer pressure and lies.  Therefore, we must examine what we are believing, cast away the lies, and strive to embrace God’s Word and prove that we are in Christ.

To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. ~Titus 2:5 KJV

To be discreet= Not likely to be seen or noticed by many people.

This would mean that a woman is not purposely calling out for worldly attention with fancy clothes and make-up to make herself desirable usually for sexual attention.

To be chaste= Morally pure or decent; not sinful. It also means simple or plain. It also means celibate, pure in thought, clean.

This would mean that a woman is not walking in the flesh because the flesh is against the things of the Spirit of God.

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold or pearls, or costly array; [10] but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. ~1 Timothy 2:9 KJV

To be modest= Not too proud or confident about your abilities, not showing or feeling excessive pride. Not showing too much of a person’s body (as in not tight or revealing). Moderate, unpretentious.

The word apparel in the greek is the word katastole which means “to let down or lower” as in the length of a dress.  The word stole, deriving from within the word katastole, means a long, loose scarf, and katastello is connected to katastole meaning “down” as in to let it down like a dress. Therefore, the word apparel found in the above 1 Timothy scripture refers to a modest (which means covered), long, loose scarf let down, which becomes like a dress.  This explains why Christian the women in Jesus’ time had long robes that they wore with their headcovering choice.  Look at today’s fashion; with the extremely short skirts and short-shorts for girls and the full, underware-revealing fad for boys that drops farther and farther down as the years go by.  Can’t you see the devil laughing as his influence causes people to unabashedly disrobe their temple, when he knows full well that we are supposed to be modest?  Plus, if we allow our children to do this, aren’t we “aiding and abetting?” In fact, complete conviction comes to mind when I think of the hot summers at the pool or beach where swimsuits get smaller and smaller or we actually have thought at one time or another that nudity is art when it is not.

A woman who is modest and godly does not aspire to exalt herself, especially in the way of her body.  It is important to realize that our Christian sisters are thinking that they are not conformed to the world, but if they are fashioning their bodies that way to look like everyone else, isn’t that the same?

We see that all that God asks of us is the direct opposite of what the devil has done from the beginning.  Otherwise, we are being tricked.  So, let us aspire to stay in the safety of the Lord through His good Word and embrace a conservative definition of modest apparel.  Are you turning tricks and defiling the temple of God?
