Modesty Minute: Fake Blessings
Estimated Reading Time: 2 minutesThe Word of God in the book of Proverbs tells us,
[21] If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: [22] For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee. ~Proverbs 25:21-22 KJV
This shows the act of blessing your enemy and how it injures them.
Unfortunately, many Christian women have turned “God bless you” into a cursing rather than a blessing.
Remember, when Jesus said bless those who persecute you, He wasn’t saying,
“Verbally fling a blessing statement to your persecutor and do it with evil intent because we want ‘heaping coals of fire’ to burn their heads off.”
Jesus expects you to transform their heart with love to inspire reconciliation because your love should jolt them until they feel they must change, repent, and turn to love you. This will bring a ministering opportunity. Your love for them also brings you a reward.
[46] For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? [47] And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others ? do not even the publicans so? [48] Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. ~Matthew 5:46-48 KJV
The Apostle Paul understood this and so he reminded the Roman church.
[19] Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. [20] Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. [21] Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. ~Romans 12:19-21 KJV
Have you ever tossed out a “God bless you” to someone whom you felt rubbed you the wrong way? Was your true intent to reconcile? Or was it the hope of firey-coal-heaping?
