Jesus didn’t die for us so that our sins would be blanketed or covered. He died for us and rose again to wipe away our sins permanently. For every man who follows Christ and has the Holy Spirit, the Spirit exposes our sins to help us to repent so that we can be sinless and blameless.

However, this was not how it worked in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, a prophet who had the Spirit of God would bring a message from God to a man who sinned and the prophet would relay the message of punishment and the curse the man brought upon himself. Here is a short example of what we learn from Ahab in the book of 1 Kings chapter 21.

Now Ahab was the king of Israel and his wife was named Jezebel. Ahab’s neighbor, Naboth, had a vineyard right next to Ahab’s house so Ahab requested the vineyard and offered Naboth money for it. However, Naboth said no because he did not want to give away his father’s inheritance that he would pass on to his children. So Ahab sulked and was depressed upon his bed when Jezebel walked in and asked him what was wrong. When she found out, she told Ahab that he had the power and she would make sure that he would have the vineyard. So she sent out commands in the king’s name to honor Naboth and send evil men to accuse him of blaspheming God at the honoring ceremony so that the people would stone him and he would die.

[9] And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people: [10] And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die. [11] And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. [12] They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. [13] And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. – 1 Kings 21:9-13 KJV

Everything happened as she had planned and she came to Ahab and told him to possess the land because their neighbor Naboth was dead.

[15] And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead. [16] And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it. – 1 Kings 21:15-16 KJV

Pretty evil .

So Ahab walks to the vineyard and at the same time God speaks to the prophet Elijah and he tells him to go to Ahab in the vineyard.

And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? – 1 Kings 21:20-26 KJV

Now Ahab said this to Elijah because Elijah had been hiding from Jezebel who wanted to kill him because he slayed the prophets of Baal. So Elijah responded.

And he answered, “I have found thee because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord. Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy posterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin.” And of Jezebel also spake the Lord, saying, “The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel. Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat.” But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the Lord , whom Jezebel his wife stirred up. And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the Amorites, whom the Lord cast out before the children of Israel.

Now God just spoke through the Prophet Elijah and told Ahab that He would send evil, cut off his future generations, cut off his sons, and any left in Israel. He would make Ahab’s house like the house of Jeroboam who chose the basest of men to become priests and like the house of Baasha who slayed the king of Judah and ruled in his place and angered God because he was vain and the work of his hands were evil. Both of these actions caused Israel to sin and this was God’s punishment to Ahab. Remember, the people stoned Naboth for Ahab’s wife and Naboth was innocent so Israel sinned because they killed an innocent man. Ahab allowed this to happen.

Ahab felt the conviction and he humbled himself.

And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. – 1 Kings 21:27 KJV

Now this is what the Lord did.

And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, “Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before Me? because he humbleth himself before Me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.” – 1 Kings 21:28-29 KJV

Now, this shows us two things:
First, God will give mercy because of humility and repentance. But it also shows us that the curse still goes out.

As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come. – Proverbs 26:2 KJV [This means that a curse without a cause shall not come. Curses because of causes definitely come.]

So the question is: What breaks curses?

Easy peasy lemon squeezieeeee!

Remember, Ahab’s curse continued, but when we are in Christ, the curses are cut off entirely because Christ takes the curse upon Himself. This means God will not punish your children for your sin. Now, if they commit the same sins, they will be punished.

Therefore, cut the curses entirely. Accept and follow Jesus Christ and teach your children the diligence to do the same. Be disciplined to walk in holiness and righteousness and to know the Word of God and doctrine. Cut off the evil, the lies, the wickedness, the worldliness, the suicide, the drugs and potions, the porn, the sodomy, the access to these abuses, etcetera.

This is faith. This is the law of the Spirit, not the law on tablets and as you study the Bible diligently, you will begin to see these commands more clearly.

[10] For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, ‘Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.’ [11] But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. [12] And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. [13] Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law [on tablets], being made a curse for us: for it is written, ‘Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree’: [14] That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. – Galatians 3:10-14 KJV

Jesus takes the curse upon Himself so that the non-Jew might obtain the blessings of Abraham.

Thus, it is our faith that saves us because when we repent (turning away from our sin) in Jesus Name, He takes the curse upon Himself to save us. This makes us clean and justified by faith. This is why the law is now in the Holy Spirit, and when we receive the promise of the Spirit through our faith (proven by our works), He convicts us of our sin so we can repent.

This does not negate the possibility of punishment. God will punish his children to correct them even if they’ve repented just like parents do to their own children. This is a part of the fruit of longsuffering and it is not a curse, but it might feel like one until His completion of your faith.

Now here it is important to understand that some Christians tell people that you can continue to sin willfully. The book of Hebrews reminds us to be careful and tells us how a man could lose the salvation Christ gave him and heap cursing and hell by sharing with us the comparison between the born again Christian who falls away from God with the born again Christian who diligently works.

[4] For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, [5] And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, [6] If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. [7] For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: [8] But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned. [9] But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. [10] For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. [11] And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: – Hebrews 6:4-11 KJV

Thank God for His beautiful gift.
