A Christian Devotional Recipe about the Savor of Salt

25 Days of Christmas Christian Devotionals Dark Chocolate, Hot CocoaI really like dark chocolate; especially hot, dark chocolate.  As I have aged, I’ve left the store-bought, sugary packets with the itty-bitty marshmallows and decided to make my own cocoa version instead. This simple recipe is for people who like dark chocolate over milk chocolate.

Combine:

A 8oz. package of Ghirardelli Premium Baking Unsweetened Cocoa
3 cups of powdered nonfat dry milk
1  3/4  cups of fine sugar
1/4 cup of French Vanilla Coffee Mate

and last of all,
1/2 teaspoon of fine salt

Carefully hand whisk all ingredients in a large bowl and then store it in a resealable jar.

Salt is an important part of this recipe. If you do not add the salt, this recipe will not be at its best. Why? It is because the savor of salt brings out the flavor in sweet dishes.

Jesus tells us that we are the salt of the earth and if we lost our saltiness, we too will be “good for nothing.” The salt that we need in our lives is righteousness because salt naturally purifies. Salt was often used to purify wine skins before the new wine was poured into them. In the same way, we must remember not to lose our purity (or saltiness) by accepting the contamination of evil ways because then we will be good for nothing, but to be tossed out and trampled.

“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” ~Matthew 5: 13, KJV

Boil your teapot water and make yourself a mug of dark chocolate cocoa. I use three natural tablespoons of mix (and a dollop of cool whip with a dash of cinnamon)—but you can adjust the amount to your liking.  Remember, if cocoa is watery, add more.  Isn’t that what we all did with those store-bought packets?

Other Ideas:
Stir with a peppermint candy cane.
Stir with a cinnamon stick.
Add 2 cups of mini marshmallows to the mix.
Use a different Coffee Mate flavor.
Go strictly organic; forget the Coffee Mate and use Organic Vanilla Powder.
Add cinnamon, chocolate shavings, or crushed peppermint on top of a dollop of cool whip.
Add an XL marshmallow on top of your cocoa.
Add milk if you would like a milk chocolate flavor.

Remember, Christians are the salt of the earth. Enjoy!
