Moment of Truth: Casting Down Lies #12

Estimated Reading Time: 6 minutes

“God uses murders, drunkards, adulterers, sinners…”

Are you believing this lie?

Telling people this information is highly misleading. God did not use these people because they were sinners, which is what a lot of folks would like to think.

No way.

Moses

God used Moses because he had a desire to help his people when he realized their captivity. God did not choose Moses because he committed murder. Moses had mercy on his people and while trying to protect an Israelite slave by striking the guard, he tried to show his people that he was with them. In other words, Moses was not a blood-thirsty killer seeking his next victim rather he was speaking up for the oppressed. Also, remember that the law was not yet given. Moses brought the law on tablets and the hundreds of ordinances after the Israelites were freed. Under the law, it was an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Therefore, Moses was not considered a murderer and even if someone tried to say “Well, what about Cain and Able?”– Cain and Able were blood brothers. Moses was not a brother to the slave driver Egyptian, but a brother to the Israelite slave and he smote the enemy of the Israelite. This was social justice. Under grace, it is no longer an eye for an eye. 1

And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian: for he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not. – Acts 7:24-25 KJV

Noah

Noah has been accused of being a drunkard. The truth is that he feared and believed God. Seriously, it took him 100 years to build the ark. That is a show of dedication. Any of us who know real drunkards, know that none of them could build an ark for 100 years. Noah was a dedicated, hard-working man. So was Noah truly as sloshed as people say?

[20] And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: [21] And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. ~Genesis 9:20-21 KJV

He planted a vineyard, and then one day, drank too much of his own wine. C’mon people. Have we forgotten this scripture below?

These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. ~Genesis 6:9 KJV

And are you disturbed by the bad preachers yet?

David

First of all, David was anointed by God many years before he committed adultery. He was a young man who followed God and talked about Him a lot. After he became king, he sinned by taking Bathsheba. God sent him a parable, punished him, and David’s child died. Not only that, God punished him further because he killed Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah. David’s son, Amnon, was killed by his other son, Absalom and then Absalom slept with David’s women in the sight of all Israel. These were David’s punishments for his sins. Ultimately, David repented deeply, loved his enemies, and his neighbors, and had courage. Overall, he had a God-fearing, tender heart that God could use. In fact, he wrote 73 of the Psalms. So to say that David was anointed because he was a sinner is inaccurate. 2

Paul

The Apostle Paul, the one who used to murder Christians under the name Saul before being born again, was incredibly zealous for God under Jewish law. His heart was bent on cutting out (what he thought was) heresy from the land. I think God liked this zealous quality about him and therefore, Paul was the man who laid the foundation of the doctrine of Christianity, which is Christ.

Please remember that when the Bible says that God often uses the weak, foolish, and despised, it is not in the context of sin, but rather — the lack of wit, might, and popularity.3

[26] For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called : [27] But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; [28] And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea , and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: [29] That no flesh should glory in His presence. ~ 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 KJV

Moreover, when Christians try to say that the Apostle Paul is confessing how imperfect he is in Romans chapter 7, they misunderstand. 4

So when people focus on the sin as being “the great trigger” behind whom God uses, it is not the truth. God hates sin; always has and always will. We ought to look at what God saw. These men had the fear of God and faith first and their talent next. In fact, God almost killed Moses because he was too fearful. Remember what the word says about the “fearful and unbelieving.” Moses was blessed to have his wife Zipporah plead the circumcision over her husband and save his life. Give a shout-out to that black woman.

The Apostle Paul talked about great faith bringing us to God, not about great sins. Here inlays the problem with many Christians today.

I personally was never chosen for my former, great sins; rather because of my great faith and collection of weaknesses.
